A Lesson from Nature

The other day, something small and simple sparked a beautiful reflection.

A child at school discovered a fallen bird’s nest on the school grounds. She brought the nest to her teacher who eventually brought it to me. At first glance, it looked like any other nest, woven from twigs, dried grass, and brush, but as I looked closer, something magical came into focus, glimmering throughout the nest were bits of sparkly ribbon, most likely remnants from a child's art project that had fluttered away in the wind.

This little nest told a big story. It reminded me that birds don’t need instructions or tools to build their homes. They gather what they can find, selecting carefully from what the environment offers. In this case, the environment included the echoes of our creativity, tiny pieces of shimmer and color unintentionally left behind by children at play.

What a beautiful, unintended collaboration!

Seeing the nest made me pause and think about how interconnected we all are, humans, animals, nature. We share this space. We leave traces of ourselves in the world, even when we don’t realize it. And sometimes, those traces become part of something entirely new, something unexpected and beautiful.

It’s a gentle reminder that we are constantly shaping and being shaped by the world around us. Our actions, even the smallest ones, ripple outward. That glittering nest was more than just a bird’s home. It was a symbol of connection, creativity, and shared space.

May we all strive to be a little more aware of how we interact with the world, and a little more open to the beauty that can emerge when nature and humanity quietly collaborate.
